OVBS sees record participants, holds Holy Eucharist in Hindi


Muscat: For the first time a record attendance of 285 Sunday School students aided by about 36 teachers and volunteers marked the 24th session of Muscat Mar Gregorios Orthodox Maha Edavaka’s Orthodox Vacation Bible School (OVBS) for 2013-2014. HG Dr Yuhanon Mar Theodoros, Metropolitan of Kottarakara-Punalur Diocese, formally opened the classes by hoisting the OVBS flag in front of the Maha Edavaka. The Bible classes were held at the Maha Edavaka from December 26, 2013 to January 3, 2014 with Deacon Subin Daniel from STOTS, Nagpur as the chief speaker and special invitee.
Maha Edavaka Vicar/President and OVBS Chairman Fr Joji George Koickalethu, Fr Binu John Thomas, Associate Vicar, Fr Varghese George and Fr Saji Amayil from Chengannur Diocese, also took part.
Dr Biju Jacob, IA & AS, who handled a session based on the theme conveyed the prime message that Jesus was a king but born in a manger. He used various topical events to drive home the point of being humble and how it’s measured. Some units like giving way, not hurting, not commenting on others, obeying rules, avoiding luxury were drilled into the young minds. Other sessions were handled by HG Dr Mar Theodoros, Fr Varghese George, and Binu on different days.
Each day had its own significance and they were on Dedication, Cleanliness, Holy Eucharist, Inspection and Picnic. The Love Feast held on New Year’s Day saw the children share their food brought from home which they thoroughly enjoyed. All the participating students and teachers were divided into 4 groups namely Reuben, Simon, and Levi, Judah with Simon group emerging top in the competitions.
For the first time, the Vicar led the Holy Eucharist in Hindi and was assisted by the Associate Vicar. On January, 2, the activities of the students were inspected by the Vicar and Associate Vicar. The picnic party was arranged at a private farm in Barka on January 4, Saturday.
At the valedictory march past, tiny tots and teachers waving yellow Catholicate flags lent grace to the occasion. Lally George, Coordinator, in her address, thanked the Trustee, Co-Trustee, Secretary, managing committee members, conveners Mariamma Philip, Varghese David, teachers, volunteers, and parish members who worked to make the event a grand success. She presented the OVBS report to Mammen George, OVBS General Convener.
About 7 families namely Mammen George, Jacob Kuriacose, Sathish George, Reji Philip, Mariamma Philip, Nithin, Varghese P David, Jabson Varghese, Shibu and Thomas Daniel helped sponsor the event.
Classes commenced at 8 am and ended at 1 pm with transport arrangement for the children and staff. MGOME executive members, managing committee members, conveners, teachers, parents and volunteers actively part to make the session a huge success.
